Mi experiencia en la FILBo y al Congreso de Ilustración FIG / My experience at FILBo and the Illustration Congress FIG

What I knew about the Congress and why I decided to go

FIG

I knew about the Congress from long time ago because my Illustration professor in Ecuador, Santiago González, used to go to Colombia to for some workshops. He told to me and my classmates that some of the techniques that he used and taught us, he learnt them there and also certain materials that he brought for his techniques.

Later on in the MA of Children’s Book Illustration, I had several Colombian classmates and from there I knew about the congress as well, because I related it to the experiences that my professor in Ecuador told us and also because some Ecuadorian illustrators were invited to the congress before. So with this fundaments about the Illustration Congress and Bogotá Book Fair (FILBo) I thought it was a good option instead of going to Bologna Book Fair this year, besides of economical reasons in between. Then I also had a Colombian friend from the MA that convinced me and because on the workshop they were promoting some famous illustrator such as Manuel Marsol (which work I love), so my trip to Colombia was definitely going to happen.

Mis expectativas y Preparación / My expectations and preparation

IMG_6383.JPG

I knew that the Book Fair in Bogotá was big and that lasted for several days, so I related it somehow with Bologna Children’s Book Fair (but I was so wrong), so I prepared myself as I was going there. When one goes to Bologna as an illustrator you have to be ready with your portfolio, dummy books and business cards. I focused more on my portfolio because I knew that I was not happy with some artworks, so I had to change them .

As well I was paying attention to the congress social media platforms and I saw which where the invited illustrators for the workshops and look after a way how can I save some money, like buying the tickets earlier, reserving my flight and hotel, because then I would have to care less of other things and just work on my portfolio.

Few weeks before my flight to Bogotá I noticed that something was wrong on the Congress’ website because the information of Manuel Marsol’s workshop (the workshop that I was registered in) and talk was not there anymore. I checked the social media platforms of the Congress and I realized that everything related to Manuel Marsol was gone. After realizing this I wrote to the organizers but I did not receive and immediate response. Because of this, I contacted Manuel and he answered me that something came up and it was not possible for him to travel to Colombia, but that he already told the organizers 2 weeks ago. With this information in mind when the Congress organizers wrote to me back, they never accepted that they committed a mistake of telling what was going on, because I understand that things like these can happen but what was under their control was communicating and being honest from the beginning, which has a lot to tell as a first impression. Besides this problem with Manuel Marsol workshop, there was also other problems with the schedule of other illustrator, Sol Undurraga. In the same way 2 weeks before the congress Sol’s schedule was changed on the 3rd day but it crushed with other workshops schedule on the 2nd day; there was such a lack of anticipation of something that they already knew before and they did not accepted their communication mistake. At the end because of all these unfortunately events I did not want to go , but I already took a decision and I would not receive my money back so there was no other choice for me besides of being positive and see what could come out from this experience.

Primera vez en Bogotá / First Time in Bogotá

I feel that for being at the Book Fair and the Illustration Congress from 5 days to a week is enough time to enjoy the city. In Bogotá there are a lot of people and you have to know and avoid the rush hours when you need to take transport. At the same time you always have to be aware of your surroundings just as every Latin-American city and walk through safe places where there are people around, keep in mind the time, take certified taxis, take enough change with you when you want to take a bus and do not check your mobile phone on the street. To exchange currency I recommend to go to Western Union, that has that most convenient rate that I could find, and there is also a Western Union at the FILBo. Sometimes you can save money on the museums tickets because some of them are free on Sundays, but they are not pricy and the Botero Museum is free.

Concerning to food, I do not have much to say, but I would recommend to have breakfast at the Panadería Florida, that is located in Carrera 7ma, because you can find typical food, besides of being a comfortable place known by the people of Bogotá and opens from 6am.

Librerías que Visité y Libros que Compré / Bookshops that I Visited and Books that I bought

At the FILBo you can find many books, but I believe it is worth to explore the bookstores in Bogotá. There were several shops that I would like to have gone, but because of logistics I could just visit these ones:

Los libros que compré / The books that I bought

Los libros que compré / The books that I bought

This Fondo de Cultura bookshop is very well located, away from some blocks of Plaza de Bolívar. The bookshop is very big and here getting lost between its shelves is a pleasure. The space has the shape of a donut, at the center you can see a water fountain and after putting your belongings in the lockers near the entrance, you can wander around the whole bookshop in a circular way until arriving where you entered. What I liked from this place is that besides of its beautiful architecture there are not just books from the Fondo de Cultura editorial but also there are books from diverse editorial houses, which brings variety to your choices. As every bookshop, it is divided in sections , but there is always a specific area where you can find personal client service in order to help you to find what you are looking for. Here are held some events and book launches, there is also a very comfy space for children’s books and a small collection of graphic novels from independent editorial houses. If you go at the time of the fair, there is a chance that the books can have a discount and sometimes it is better that you buy at the store because of the variety available.

This bookshop it is also located in the center of Bogotá, very close to the Botero Museum. It is a small space, but in which you could find books related with creative themes not just from Taschen but also from other editorial houses. The place at first does not calls your attention, but when you look carefully you can find very eye-catching books that communicate inspiration in a visual way.

It is a second hand bookshop that is is located in the center of Bogotá, near the Gold Museum. If you ever have been to Shakespeare & Co in Paris, you can have the same feeling here but with more vintage merchandise and with less people. The bookshop is quite big and you have to leave your bag at the entrance. In some occasions it is good to explore the place, but if you are looking for a specific theme it is better to ask to the staff. I tried to find a book that have the botanical illustrations of José Celestino Mutis, but in the area of the botanical expedition of Mutis I spent 45 minutes with no luck. Even though I found another book with botanical illustrations similar to the ones I was looking for, but I am sure that I would not find that book in other place. If you like books and bookshops in general, it is a good place to visit in Bogotá and there can be a chance that you find magical surprises, but just remember that you have to bargain.

La Feria del Libro y el Congreso Internacional de Ilustración FIG9 / The Book Fair and the International Illustration Congress FIG9

Conclusiones y Pensamientos / Conclusions and Thoughts

I believe it is good to go and see how things are done in other places and explore different markets, besides the book fair and the illustration congress have an international view but more in a regional way. I mean that the events where more focused for Ibero America, Latin America or South America and if you can speak Spanish. Even though the Illustration Congress FIG is oriented to illustration, the book fair covers bigger areas and does not have many illustration events, but its objective is to sell books. The readers are the target of the fair instead of writers or illustrators, because the visible end goal was a way to promote reading in Bogotá. In Colombia there are several independent editorial houses that are interesting and you can see them at the FILBo, but I felt that it was no appropriate to show my work because there were so many people, and what mattered to the bookshops and editorial houses was to sell their books. I think that if one goes to Bogotá it is key to go the Illustration Congress talks because it is really worth it to have different illustrators and artists, where you can hear about their experiences and can bring you knowledge that in few places you can find so diverse and condensed information at the same time.

May be because of the organizers lack of organization before going to the Congress makes me not having an impartial vision of this event, but besides the negative part I believe that it was worth to go and have a broader vision of what is happening in other countries and how they collaborate between them.
