Mis Libros Álbumes Favoritos, Parte II / My Favourite Picture Books, Part II

This is the second part of my favourite picture books inside my collection.

This book does not need introduction; it is a classic according to structure and format, especially in Latin America. I discovered it in my first illustration class at university and it was a great surprise to see the use of a concertina book in tune with the story. Isol uses simple drawings and easily recognizable, with two colours. The story pass by starting with the little boy voice and when you turn the book around, you can see the same story told by other character, for this colours help a lot. Making a concertina book is very complex because you have to justify the format and in this case it works perfectly well with the story and the design.

“Daqui Ninguém Passa!” por Isabel Minhós Martins y Bernardo P. Carvalho

20170806_134527.jpg

I remember that I found this storytelling inside the collection of my friend Chiao. The book called my attention by the brave use of markers with bright colours and a mix media, complemented in a white space. Bernado Carvalho made other book that has a very similar technique, called “Quintais”, which is also wonderful, but sadly there aren’t copies available at the moment. In this case the illustration play with the pictorial landscape, represented by white pages in a fun way. The story is simple, but indirectly it is about politic themes, the people union and revolution.

“Soy un Artista” por Marta Altés

20170806_134820.jpg

I believe Marta is much known for her sense of humour and the narrative of her storytelling. I remember that I had a tutorial with her, some of my classmates had told me that she has a good eye to analyse and tell stories, which I proved it was right. In “I am an artist” there is a lot of comparison between what the little boy (principal character) and his mother think and this is what it turns the story charismatic, because we can identify with both characters in several situations. The jokes are constant in the story, even until the end. I think that Marta’s picture books are a good example to analyse compositions, the use of spreads, surprises and ecstasy in the rhythm of the story.

“Diapasón” por Laëtitia Devernay

20170806_134901.jpg

“Diapason” by Laëtitia Devernay

The first thing that caught my eye when I saw this book was the vertical format; it is not very common to find long books like this. The format is justified with the story that is made to approach a musical landscape from the trees and the sky. The lack of text emphasises sounds and movement imagination. Diapason ends with the concert, but finishes at the same time with a little secondary message that encloses the story. This book was the winner of the Bologna Ragazzi Award of 2011 and the CF Picture Book Festival of 2010.

“Mi pequeño hermano invisible” por Ana Pez

20170806_134631.jpg

This book had a special mention in Opera Prima as part of the Bologna Ragazzi Award of 2015. It is incredible how Ana Pez by complementary colours, may be by screen-printing, and the help of a pair of glasses, makes the story to come alive and create sense. The double scenarios that pass by the story have a great sense of detail and moreover they work intelligently with the narrative. Especially when there is an interactive object, it brings more to children’s attention for the game of the images (I’d proved it with my nephews), as it was magical. This is a book to play.
