Querida Amiga, / Dear Friend,

Una Carta Para Alguien Que Quiera Renunciar Una Carrera Creativa

A Letter For Someone Who Wants To Quit A Creative Career

Querida amiga,

Dear friend,

We haven’t talk to each other since a long time ago; I hope you are alright wherever you are. I write to you because some of our friends in common had told me that you were planning to quit and I felt very sad about it. Just now I had the courage to tell you to please reconsider this thought, from whatever situation you are passing through. I know that I don’t have that much experience, but what I have is passion to advise you to give it another chance.

I recognize it is hard to be a creative person and especially for depending in a career in this field, because what we do comes from our willingness to express ourselves and so in a way we are seeking for acceptance. Acceptance of the people near us, our teachers, an editor, a publisher, an agent, to be liked and that someday our work will be published and recognized. I cannot guaranty you that this is going to happen to me or to you; we don’t know what can the future hold for us. But I am sure for one thing (and I can just talk for me, but may be this can also apply for you), I like to draw and create, this makes me happy and for the term I am able to make this happen, I will fight to make a space for it every time I can. Even beyond the expectations, and when you see it like that, all this weight in our shoulders will be lighter and lighter.

I guess to continue this of falling and getting up is a muscle that we need to develop; later on we will master it. But I don’t mean that all in our lives need to be just focused on our creative side. What am trying to say is that if our art is not yet paying the bills, we still need to keep the day job, because let’s be honest, we need to survive somehow. Let’s think about of having a part time job or a source of income and also taking time to our art will allow us to be free. I believe when there is no longer such pressure into our artwork, we can dedicate to what we really want to do, the ideas we want to explore, the new technique we were thinking to try months ago.

As we keep going we will have more work, more illustrations and we can still try to reach our goal, eventually no-s will become in may be-s and later on yes-es. This is my believe, but you are the one who has the power to stay and keep working hard or go for the easiest way of giving up. Whatever your choice is, I still will care about you and you can count on. I am here for you my friend.

Wishing you the best always.

Bear hugs,

Estefania
