Frannerd
Francisca Meneses es una ilustradora chilena a la cual descubrí cuando estaba realizado mi proyecto de disertación de la maestría, noviembre 2016. Me habría gustado descubrirla antes porque ella es muy generosa con su conocimiento sobre ilustración y sobre sus experiencias. Me ha pasado constantemente que es dificil encontrar información sobre esta carrera y hay pocos contenidos a los cuales recurrir al respecto. Youtube ha sido una plataforma en donde estos contenidos han salido a la luz. Sobre todo es un sentimiento placentero descubrir que algunas cosas que te pasan a ti, son de cierta manera universales y te puedes relacionar con gente que está al otro lado del mundo.
Francisca Meneses is a Chilean illustrator and I discovered her when I was doing my dissertation project in November 2016. I would like to had discovered her before because she is very generous with her knowledge and her experiences related to illustration. It had happened constantly that it is difficult find information about this career and that there are few content that you can make research about. Youtube has a platform in which these contents had been brought to light. Especially it is a pleasant feeling to know that the things are happening to you are in a certain way universal and you can relate to people that are in the other side of the world.
Siento que Fran es muy honesta y eso es lo que más me atrae de ella. Además la veo como una lider porque ha formado su carrera a base de esfuerzo, constancia y valentía. Con esto quiero decir que poco a poco ha ido construyendo su carrera, formándose de una manera autodidacta, desarrollando productos, creando su propia tienda, publicando libros y siendo muy proactiva en cuanto a su promoción.
I feel that Fran is very hones ans this what I love the most about her. Besides, I see her as a role model because she had transformed her career based in effort, discipline and bravery. With this I want to say that little by little she has built her career , getting knowledge in an autodidact way, developing products, creating her own shop, publising books and being proactive about her marketing.
Las cosas que compré / The things I bought
Francisca vivió en Alemania y ahora vive con su esposo en Hastings - Reino Unido, de donde envía todos sus productos. Es vegana, tiene dos gatos (Cereal y Hamburguesa), ama los marcadores Copic y una de sus influencias ha sido el manga y anime, especialemente Salor Moon y Sakura Card Captors. Publica un video cada semana en Youtube, normalmente los viernes, pero también una cuenta en Patreon, donde tiene un newletter como posdcast cada dos semanas y demás video detrás de su trabajo.
Francisca lived in Germany and now lives with her husband in Hastings - UK, where she sends all of her products. She is vegan, has two cats (Cereal and Hamburguesa), she loves Copic markers and one of her big influences had being manga and anime, especially Sailor Moon and Sakura Card Captors. She publishes a video per week on Youtube, usually on Fridays, but she also has a Patreon account, where she has a podcast newsletter each two weeks and different videos behind the scenes of her work.
Holly Exley
Holly Exley es una ilustradora británica que se especializa más en ilustración de comida, utilizando más acuarela que otros materiales. Descubrí a Holly en Youtube casi al mismo tiempo que Fran y me gusta mucho ver sus video porque es muy conciente sobre el medio ambiente, el amor hacia los animales además de compartir mucho su diario vivir como una ilustradora independiente y dando consejos también.
Holly Exley is a British illustrator that specializes more in food illustration, using more watercolor than other materials. I discovered Holly in Youtube around the same time I discovered Fran and I like to watch her videos because she is very concerned about the environment, love to animals and besides she likes to share a lot of her daily life as a freelance illustrator and giving advice as well.
Me parece interesante seguir a ilustradores que normalmente no hacen el mismo trabajo que hago y ver como trabajan con diferentes elecciones de color, temática, materiales, etc. En este periódo Holly se está replanteando metas y estrategias para darle un pequeño giro a su carrera. Ahora publica dos videos por semana en donde se puede ver su estilo de vida en el distrito de los picos en el Reino Unido, ilustración, veganismo, los preparativos para su boda y a sus perros, Quentin y Mitch.
I believe it is interesting to follow illustrators that normally don't do the same work as I and see how they work with different color combination, theme, materials, etc. In this period Holly is rethinking her goals and strategies to give a small turn into her career. Now she publishes two videos per week in which you can see her life style in the Peak district in the UK, illustration, veganism, her wedding preparation and her dogs, Quentin and Mitch.
Anorak Magazine
Anorak es una revista de niños ubicada en el Reino Unido de índole independiente, creada en 2006. Es un revista muy famosa, por lo que es dificil acceder a que revisen tu portafolio como ilustrador. Lo importante de Anorak es que tienen recursos enfocados en el desarrollo de la imaginación, que les permite ser distintos a una revista infantil convencional, por lo que dan un énfasis importante a la calidad de la imagen.
Anorak is an independent children's magazine located in the UK and created in 2006. It is a very famous magazine, so it is difficult to get your portfolio viewed as an illustrator. The important thing about Anorak is that it has resources focused on imagination development that allow it to be different from a conventional children's magazine, this is the reason why the editors put emphasis to the image quality.
Jade Huang
Las illustraciones de Jade en la revista 43 de Anorak / Jade's illustrations, Anorak magazine issue 43
Jade es una ilustradora de Taiwan y estudió en mi programa de la maestría (MA. Children's Book Illustration), un año antes que mí. Es muy talentosa, por lo que en el 2016 fue una de las ilustradoras seleccionadas para el concurso de Bologna Children's Book Fair. Ya ha publicado algunos libros álbumes, además de hacer otras comisiones como el de la revista Anorak. Además es muy buena gente, cuando ella se fue de Cambridge me dio su bicicleta gratis, la cual se convirtió en mi medio de transporte por la ciudad.
Jade is a Taiwanese illustrator that studied in my same MA program (MA. Children's Book Illustration), but a year before me. She is very talented and this is the reason why in 2016 she was one of the selected illustrators in the Bologna Children's Book Fair contest. She has already published some picture books, besides of doing other commissions as the one on the Anorak magazine. She is also a good person, when she left Cambridge, she gave me her bicycle for free, which became my mean of transport around the city.
Ohh Deer
Ohh Deer es una compañía del Reino Unido de artículos de papelería, tajetería y diferentes cosas curiosas ilustradas. Contratan a varios ilustradores (muchos de ellos famosos), lo cual brinda variedad a sus productos. Otra característica importante de Ohh Deer es que muchas veces se enfocan en el humor.
Ohh deer is a company based in the UK of stationary products, letters and different quirky illustrated objects. They hire various illustrators (most of them famous), which gives variety to their goods. Another important characteristic about Ohh Deer is that the focus a lot on humor.
Gemma Correll
Gemma Correll no necesita introducción, pero aquí voy: ella es una caricaturista, escritora e ilustradora británica que vive en los Estados Unidos. Sus dibujos muestran su opinión, su sentido del humor (el cual me encanta) y su uso limitado de color. Ha publicado varios libros, colaborados en zines, ha sido parte de catálogos anuales y premiada varias veces. Hay muchas más información sobre Gemma, pero solo quería escribir una descripción rápida. Gemma Correll doesn't need introduction, but here I go: she is a British cartoonist, writer and illustrator based in the US. Her drawings shows her opinion, her sense humor (which I love) and her limited color pallet. She has published a lot of books, collaborated in zines, been part of annuals and also been awarded several times.
